Advancing Arab Youth Leadership and Inclusion

The recent Ajik conference, organized by the Ajyal Movement, united young leaders and educators to discuss ways to strengthen Arab youth leadership and broaden opportunities in Israeli society. Discussions emphasized civic participation, solidarity, and avenues for educational and social advancement among Arab Israelis.

Ajik’s network, active in communities nationwide, empowers youth to address key challenges and cultivates a shared sense of purpose. Conference participants explored innovative models for engagement, leadership, and growth—bridging divides and shaping a more inclusive future.

Speakers underscored how persistent social and economic barriers—such as poverty, educational disparities, and discrimination—have limited opportunities for Arab youth. They advocated reversing these trends by nurturing leadership, fostering public involvement, and promoting collective responsibility for a more just and peaceful society.

Many called for programs that instill values of equality, coexistence, and democracy, noting the transformative power of informal education and volunteering. In a reality forever changed by the events of October 7th and the ongoing war, speakers recognized that Israeli society is facing profound trauma and ongoing disruption. Against this backdrop, partnership and collaboration in education have become more essential than ever—not only to restore stability, but also to rebuild trust and hope for the future.

The conviction was voiced that through joint efforts, new opportunities for healing and renewal can emerge. These principles—leadership, engagement, and social responsibility—also guide the Amal Educational Network. With half its students from Arab communities, Amal is dedicated to building belonging, supporting dialogue, and expanding opportunity for every learner. By championing diverse leadership and collaborative action, organizations like Ajik and Amal work side by side to enable all youth to thrive as active and equal participants in society.

“We have taken it upon ourselves to build a shared space, a shared society,” said Khair El-Baz, Chairperson of the Ajik organization, adding that Ajik aims to expand its work to the entire Arab society in Israel. “Some might say, ‘these are dreams,’ but we are working. We will continue to strive for partnership within Arab society, and between Arab society and Jewish society.”
