Lighting the Way Forward – Happy Hanukkah

Hanukkah is often seen as the celebration of a military victory—but the deeper message of the holiday is not about might or power. Our sages remind us, in the words of the prophet Zechariah: “Not by might, nor by power, but by My spirit.” The true miracle of Hanukkah lies in the light that endures beyond the struggle—the ruach, the spirit that sustains us, rebuilds us, and renews our shared commitment to one another.

As Israel emerges from one of the most difficult chapters in its history, the story of Hanukkah feels especially timely. We are a nation both wounded and resilient. The battles may have ended, but the task of rebuilding—morally, socially, and educationally—has only begun.

Today, as we mark 800 days since the Hamas attack of October 7, the meaning of Hanukkah resonates even more deeply. The pain of loss remains sharp across Israel. Only days ago, the nation watched haunting images from two years ago—footage of six

hostages who were murdered in a Hamas tunnel, lighting a Hanukkah candle in December 2023. Carmel, Eden, Alex, Ori, Hersch and Almog – so frail and terrified but still clung to faith, hoping for a miracle that never came. Today, one hostage’s body, Ran Gevili, remains in Gaza. Tonight, we light a yellow candle in his memory and in the hope that he will be returned for burial in his home in Israel.

At Amal, our mission after this long and painful period is clear: to help restore the light in the hearts of Israel’s children. Through learning, inclusion, and mutual respect, we work to strengthen the values that define a democratic and ethical society. Our schools are places where resilience grows, where equality and responsibility are not abstract ideals but lived experiences.

May this Hanukkah bring comfort, strength, and inspiration to all those rebuilding their lives and to all who keep the flame of hope alive. Chag Urim Sameach – Happy Hanukkah from the Amal Educational Network
