Amal Marks Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Day Amid Growing Social Polarization

Yesterday, Amal marked the 31st anniversary of the murder of former PM Yitzak Rabin. Israel’s first political murder took place on November 4, 1995, at Kikar Malchei Israel Square (now named after him: Rabin’s Square) following the “Yes to Peace, No to Violence” rally. This tragic event remains a traumatic fracture point in Israeli history. 31 years later Israel finds itself navigating complex security, political, and social conditions, where deep polarization exists alongside widespread cross-sector solidarity. In response to this national climate, the Ministry of Education designated this year’s commemoration under the theme “In Times of Disagreement – Arguing Responsibly,” challenging schools across the nation to address severe ideological disputes while preserving mutual respect and social cohesion.
Aligning with this national directive, Amal Educational Network dedicated the memorial day to honoring Rabin’s legacy while hosting facilitated dialogue circles, workshops, state ceremonies, and lectures focused on democracy and the dangers of violent rhetoric. Opening with official assemblies, students and educators across Amal schools actively engaged in analyzing the crucial link between collective memory, unity and civic responsibility. Amid current national tensions, further highlighted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision not to attend the annual ceremony at the President’s Residence, the traumatic questions raised in 1995 feel more urgent than ever for the future of Israeli society.
This meaningful educational day highlights Amal’s fundamental purpose as a leading 21st-century educational network that prepares youth to handle complex societal realities. Serving 26,000 students across 50 schools in 24 municipalities, spanning Jewish, Arab, Druze, and Bedouin communities, Amal actively equips its diverse student body with tools for respectful, constructive discourse on sensitive topics. By teaching students to argue responsibly without dismantling their shared home, Amal ensures that its schools serve as unifying spaces, safeguarding democratic values and building a resilient future for Israeli society.
